Seattle Deal Of The Week

To provide something unique and beneficial just to our newspaper visitors, we are implementing a new program called our “Seattle deal of the week”.  Every Monday we are going to promote an offer that is an extremely good deal.  The deals themselves will vary from no cost to you to highly discounted.

Our first deal is brought to you by RepuVision.com.  They are Seattle marketing company helping businesses (or website owners) who want more traffic exposure online.  The leads they generate are highly targeted due to people already knowing what they are looking for (as compared to a billboard or a magazine which is a broad audience) online.

THE DEAL:

RepuVision is offering a no cost targeted keyword report for your site or business. After a quick call to get a better understanding of your business, they will generate a keyword report of some of the areas you maybe missing in regards to potential customers and traffic available online.  The report also includes the amount of traffic (total volume) and they can also include a competition review if asked.  We received one for the Emerald City Journal and found it very informative and useful for the future.

It’s a $200 dollar value and no cost to you this week only (expires 9/14/12 at 5pm)

How To Claim:

Since this offer is only advertised on the Emerald City Journal, you need to give them a quick call directly at 425-322-3376 and request the “Keyword Report” (no cost deal) posted on the Emerald City Journal.

Simple Ways To Save Money

The past few years I have been on a mission to save money.  It seems everything just costs way to much and I’m done with it.  I call it a minimulist lifestyle and of course it’s not for everyone.  Making more money and saving it is something everyone wants but to what extreme you’re personally willing to go is the question.  I’m pretty extreme, however, I believe the tips below are my best simple ways to save money for the everyday person.  I took out the extreme ones like moving out of the country.  Like I said, some people are willing to take a more extreme approach and others are not so pick and choose as you wish.

ENERGY:  I find each month one of the biggest bills is energy.  It’s rediculously high and my thermastat has been turned off for months.  Unfortunately, not much we can do here except try to use less.  I went around the house and unplugged the things I rarely use.  Like lamps I never use but they are plugged in.  The toaster and other kitchen counter appliances are plugged in so I unplugged them also.   Even though, you don’t use things that are plugged into the outlet doesn’t mean they are not charging you for it.  My point is take a walk around the house and unplug the things you rarely use.  If you decide to use it later simply plug it back it and use it temporarly.

INSURANCE:  If you’ve been with the same insurance provider for more than 3 years, you’re probably paying too much.  You always save the most when changing providers so make a few calls and see what there quotes are.

PRESCRIPTIONS:  If you have prescriptions that cost a lot each month, take a trip to canada or simply buy your perscriptions online at a reputable canadian pharmacy.  All that is required is your prescription from the doctor and shipping in some cases is free.  After the Primetine Mist issue I was placed on Qvar for my ashama medication.  It costs $213 for one canister which lasts a little less than 2 months.  I can get the same thing online for $36 bucks.  In short, it cost more in America so look at other options.

BANKING:  If you have a checking account anywhere that charges you a per month fee – cancel them.  Free checking has been available for many years now so getting charged $7 a month by the bank to hold your money and collect your interest (you ain’t making no interest anyway) is a big rip off.  I love my BECU account.  I hate Bank Of America and US Bank.

PHONE LINES:  If you just have a landline you use for local calls then this probably won’t save you to much.  However, if you’re paying for any long distance or unlimited calling and have a landline you’re getting ripped off.  You’re probably using Century Link or Comcast.  Make the switch to a prepaid cell phone.  You can get them at Walmart (straight talk) and it’s pay as you go (no contracts).  They run off AT&T or Verizon networks and I use the AT&T option.  For $30 bucks I get 1000 min voice, 1000 min text, caller id, voice mail, call waiting, and pretty much all the bells and whistles.  I haven’t had a drop call in so long I can’t remember.  I easily saved over $100 per month doing this.  If you’re thinking about this make sure you look at your bill to calculate how many minutes you’re using now.

INTERNET/TV:  Comcast is my provider and my biggest expense with them is my Internet.  I have found that the Internet costs are the hardest to lower, however, everything else like your TV or phone line can be lowered.  To get it lowered, however, you can’t just ask you have to call them and discuss cancelling.  Just say you’re going through hard times and need to “discuss” cancelling service.  They will forward you to a special team of representives that are hired to keep you around even if you pay less.  I dropped my TV bills down to $10 per month – how much are you paying?

CREDIT CARD DEBT:  (EXTREME TIP – NOT FOR EVERYONE) If you have credit card debt that is out of control and your credit is already not so good – you may want to save up and negociate / settle them.  Strategies online by the pros will tell you to call them and negociate your interest rates I have found that to be difficult or perhaps they are not willing to do that anymore.  If you think about it from their perspective it makes sense.  With all banks $1 dollar given to them allows them to barrow $10 off it it and that is how banks (checking accounts) work.  So, if you’re in a dire situation and thinking about paying one off completely using savings or equity…. consider letting it go a few months.  Next, it will go to collections.  Once it goes to a collection company the credit card company sold it to them for pennys on the dollar and you can negociate it at 25% of the balance or less.  The trick is to don’t be desperate when talking to them and don’t wait to long to settle or you’ll get sued (at which point you’ll settle for even less).  Before starting change your address if possible (go paperless online) and change your number to a Google Voice number so you’re not called all the time.  Like I said extreme option and you’re personal situation determines if it’s for you or not.

MORTGAGE:  If you’ve lost your shorts and you’re home isn’t worth anything anymore consider walking away.  Stop throwing your money into the fire.  Foreclosure takes over a year so considering the amount you’ll save in a year (or add a renter) you’ll make way more than continuing your payments.  Additional Seattle mortgage info here. Another great site is:  LoanSafe.org.

SHOPPING CARDS + GAS:  If you go to Safeway or Fredmeyer for your shopping consider saving & working together as a family to get the best deals.  The trick is to use one phone number as a family.  If everyone uses the one phone number at checkout you’ll save considerably more.  I typically save 30 cents a gallon on gas each fill-up! It’s amazing.

Georgetown Garden Walk (July 8th)

Well folks you all know about the Jingle Bell Run, then last week they had the Rock and Roll run where people paid between $40 and $150 dollars to participate. It was not to “cure” anything but was put on by a for profit outfit. I have never been able to understand why hundreds or thousands of people buy a new shirt with a logo, pay a big amount to go run when they most likely don’t even like to run. Well that being said, lets forget the “runs” that cost a lot.

How about taking in the Georgetown Garden Walk for free? You can get a lot of nice exercise by walking and have fun seeing what people raise in their yards. This is the 17th year of this experience and it gets bigger every year. One of the very best features – it’s absolutely free. You don’t have to worry about being on time. It is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 5 p.m. You can pick up maps of the tour at the Bank of America parking lot in Georgetown. It is located at 1112 S Bailey st.  You can check out more on the website. http://georgetowngardenwalk.com

There will be lots of artist’s and restaurants included on the map for you to visit besides wandering through yards. There will be sandwich boards on the sidewalks in front of houses that you may visit. I am sure there will be lots of really interesting things to see and learn from.

I raise succulents commonly called Hen and Chicks for rockeries or dish gardens or whatever you want to do with them. I will be having a sale that day on my parking strip and front yard. If you are into creating walls or outdoor living wreaths etc this is the place to come. I cut off little water bottles (think green here), and will have hundreds of little starts in those for only 50 cents each. I have many many colors but this time of the year they look a lot alike. I have whole trays of sedum . Stop by and take a look while you are out walking. Looky lous are welcome for sure. Hope to see you Sunday July 8th.  Look on the map for Lilly and it will give my address.

See pictures for a sample of what you can see at my house. If you want groovy things I have planters made from old phonograph records. Some planted – some empty.

Weekend Fun In Seattle – Tourist Experience

My Nephew graduated from High School recently and I decided to book them a Hotel in Seattle and go to all the tourists type areas.  I figured it would be good to give the Journal a first person perspective what it was like as a Seattle tourist for a weekend.  Since my Nephew or his friends don’t live in Seattle and new to the scene, I decided to show him and two of his friends the ropes.  From the Hotel, EMP, Space Needle, Pike Place Market – it was quite the adventure.

Last week I started the hotel search.  My goal was to stay close to Pike Place as we had a few other things planned in the area that we could simply walked to them (instead of paying for a taxi).  That unfortunately did not happen.  Many of the hotels in Seattle were booked.  Seattle had a Rock N Roll Marathon and the Pride Festival scheduled for the weekend.  I ended up booking a room at the Courtyard Marriott on Lake Union.  The package was $239 and include two Queens, two passes to the EMP, and two free breakfasts.  They also had a pool and a view which was a nice add on.  So I called them up to order and obviously a sales lady who doesn’t work there arranged the reservation.  I told them 3 were staying and we would need one roll-away bed.  She added it to the reservation and it was included in my confirmation email sent to me after the call.  I call them up a day before check-in (now you call the hotel directly – guest services) and confirm the reservation (Yes) and verify the roll-away would be added.  The guest services lady mentions that they don’t have roll-away beds at this location.  Well… I must say that was a big disappointment and honestly felt tricked.  It’s a day before now and we’re locked in and they know it.  The Nephew and friends are 17 and 18 year olds.  Typically they are up all night playing video games, cards, or watching movies anyway.  I know I got screwed already but figured it wouldn’t be the first time these guys made it work.  I figured we would just grab a bunch of pillows and blankets and they’ll make it work – which we did.  That doesn’t make it right, however, the Courtyard Marriott on Lake Union still screwed it up.

We get to the Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Lake Union and check-in at 3pm (their earliest check-in time by the way). If you’ve never been here it’s kind of out of the way and there is some construction in the area.  You have Jillian’s across the street which seems dead every time I look in and Trago which replaced the dying Outback Restaurant on the corner.  Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Lake Union is very nice.  The Hotel is nice, the rooms are nice, great pool, hot tub etc.  The area doesn’t really have any good parking thus you can expect to drop $20 per day on that alone.

I purchased 4 tickets to the School Of Rock concert (Show Box) which starts at 7pm so with about 3 hrs to spare we headed down to the Pike Place Market.  Being on a Saturday, Pike Place Market was packed with people.  We made our way through it and downstairs they found their favorite store.  It was a comic and collectible store and the guys ended up buying several things.  As we head out of the Market, we all were getting hungry and wanted to eat before the big rock concert which would probably last until 11pm I guessed.  My Nephew is big into guitars and music so I figured they would love the Hard Rock Cafe – and they did.  Again, the place was backed and this was probably the highlight of the trip.  The food, music, and atmosphere was great.  The waiter was just average but overall a great experience for the young guys.

It’s 6:25pm now and about time to walk over to the big rock concert at the Show Box.  If you’ve never heard of School Of Rock it’s a movie featuring Jake Black and features lots of great songs.  I knew Jack Black wasn’t in this concert but figured a great show by some professional musicians ROCKING OUT!!  The show starts at 7pm and we’re there by 6:35 to grab out seats.  As we reach the door, we are informed the doors don’t open until 7pm.  OK… that is weird so they have this roped area going down the sidewalk and that is where the line starts.  We jump in line and few minutes later it’s wrapped around the block with people.  While I am standing in line I can’t help but think if the show starts at 7pm (per the ticket) and they open the doors at 7pm… they are losing so much money.  You can’t help but think of all these people wrapped around the block and all the revenue they are missing out on if they were inside waiting (buying drinks and merchandise etc).  I guess it was just poor management or something.  They open the doors about 7:10 and we walk into a venue which is standing room only.  Oh great we’re going to have to stand for 2 hours.  As we are standing and waiting for the show to start, the amount of really young kids is starting to increase.  We’re talking about about 10 year olds to 14 year olds running around doing their normal thing with their friends.  Unfortunately, this Rock Concert at the Show Box, a major venue, is looking more like a kids talent show.  As the show started, we learned more that it was actually a real music school with kids learning how to play music.  SERIOUSLY!  As I watch each act sorta like a 6th grade camp feel where each cabin team had a “performance” to put on.  I can’t help but think who is making all the money from the ticket sales and why are they playing at the Show Box (on a Friday night) which featured big groups like Nirvana used to play.  We didn’t even last the full ” Rock concert” unfortunately.  After two hours of standing watching kids, we all agreed to leave a little early.  The hotel pool closed at 11pm and that would be more entertaining than this elementary school talent show.  It was just the wrong place for this type of show and since it tricked me (who investigates things pretty thoroughly before buying) it must have let down a lot of others also who were there.

After an uncomfortable night sleeping for many, we started a new day.  Breakfast was free for two of us and that means we’ll be needing to order another two.  There is a breakfast cashier who gets us started.  I told her we have two free breakfasts from the hotel and we’ll need to order two more.  I ask her how much the buffet is and she says $11.99 – that sounds OK with me I guess.  Having stayed in several hotels in Seattle, I know the hotel breakfast buffets are nothing special and I have pretty low expectations.  This was pretty much the same experience.  They have scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, bread, self serve waffle maker if you want one.  I saw some boxed yogurt and some self serve orange juice if wanted also.  The entire buffet was about a half a wall in size.  As I was grabbing my breakfast, there was a gentleman at the table maybe 3 feet to my right and his exact words were “I am not paying 12 bucks for eggs and bacon”.  I couldn’t help but laugh on the inside a little because he was actually right on with it.  He was just trying to get the best bang for his 12 bucks and honestly the buffet was below average when it came to the selection.  All filled up, our waiter brings the bill and it’s $30 bucks and some change.  I look at it and tell him the lady said it was 11.99? He said “No it’s 13.99”.  I said “well you screwed up because the lady at the front told me 11.99.”  I said, “I going to pay it because it’s only a few bucks but you’re completely wrong.”  I think I just felt another stab in the back.  You really have to watch these hotels.  This is actually the second time (last time Bellevue Red Lion) except the Red Lion had a big sign while walking in that read $9.95, however, the bill was $25 each!  Big Rip Off.

Time to checkout and see the final damage – the bill.  As we are checking out I was hoping they’d ask how my experience was…. but she didn’t even ask.  Just took the room keys and said you’re good.  I requested a final bill which came to $310.  Ouch!  Approx. $40 dollars in just taxes…. makes you wonder where these taxes go doesn’t it?

The final stop was the Experience Music Project (EMP).  We had two free tickets from the hotel so we purchase another two when we got there.  They are about $15 bucks each.  The EMP was very much worth it in my opinion.  They have some great items like the original Star Trek chair to the original Super Man outfit Christopher Reeve wore.  It’s not just about items, however, you can learn and listen about music.  For $15 bucks, you can easily spend 3 hours in this place – just go on a Sunday when nothing is happening downtown so you can park free on the streets.

There you have it folks.  The day in the life as a Seattle tourist.

Polly Immigrant Story – Conclusion

Polly says hello again. Hope you have enjoyed my two previous stories (Start Here) (Part 2 Here) as much as I have enjoyed digging out the old pictures and writing about them. I ended my last story by saying life stinks. This would be the place to explain there is a couple meanings to the word stink. I meant it to say I was not living the good life anymore. But there is another stink I feel I should mention here. The kind that I discovered with my nose.

There is a huge kiwi vine beside the railing that I sit on. One of my jobs has been to be the KIWI tester. I tell the old lady when they are just right to pick. I was sitting there “nibbling and testing” a kiwi when here came a bunch of illegal immigrants. I had to protect the old Lady’s kiwi’s. My adrenalin kicked in and I landed right in the middle of one illegal. Surprise, surprise he didn’t fight at all. He made himself into a ball. No head, feet or a thing, and man did he stink. Their defense is to play dead and smell like the worst spoiled, decayed meat that even a vulture would not touch. I backed off and headed for a bath. I had a date with Big Red but he dumped me. Now my life stinks and so do I.

Blacky still has not brought any acorns. He eats from my seed dish and even has started to dig up the food I buried. I had such faith in him. What was I thinking? My life was already about as good as it gets with the old lady feeding me. Sure I had to work some but not half as hard as spending all day trying to find enough food to get by on. I lay on the sill at the kitchen door and only let the cats in and out. I am worried about Frosty because I heard them saying Old Whity didn’t sign up for Blacycare and she cant get hospice coverage because of her age. That’s not nice to talk that way about little frosty who was born right in this house. She deserves hospice care if anyone does.

I don’t see any little sparrows flying around at all anymore. The tree in front yard by the feeder used to be full of them. I decided to make a quick trip to the old bird feeder where it all started and a bird about twice as big as a sparrow was there. It was black with a pretty red wing. I thought it must be a red winged blackbird. I said “Hi I am Polly the resident squirrel, who are you?” Well you better be sitting down when you read this because I fell off the feeder at that point. She said “Oh I am an Acorn”. Can you imagine a pretty bird calling herself a NUT? I knew I was dealing with a Crazy Lady but I climbed back up to eat with her. I said no you are not an Acorn, you’re a bird. That’s when she told me that the Possums and Raccoons were Acorns too. My life had really got crazy. I admit they were all acting like NUTS, coming in here eating my food, taking over my possessions and I didn’t understand the situation we squirrels had gotten into when we fell for Blacky’s line that he had brought a lot of acorns and our lives would be better. The Acorn raccoons were the worst as far as danger went because they were all over the plant racks where we squirrels always played, and now was even stealing the cats food, one handful at a time. They will eat birds, squirrels, even cats and steal our food too. They have to go.
I tried to talk to Blacky but he would not listen to what we fellow squirrels had to say. I let him know what I thought about Illegal Immigrants who were also called Acorns, who were also his helpers. I told him we squirrels were going to get a bunch of Pit Bulls to clear out the illegals but he said he would take care of it. He said he would station an Official Immigration Agent on the bird feeder and on the roof of the rental house.

How stupid can a community organizer get? His Immigration agent was a Hawk or Falcon or some darn thing that we were all afraid of, even his red winged Acorns could not eat there. This agent will eat squirrels and all birds so what on earth was he thinking? Even Blacky is about to be ran out of here. That agent will turn on him if it gets hungry and for sure the Old Lady is not putting anymore food out for anyone. Haven’t seen the blonde peace keeper acorn(possum) for days. She must be on a fact finding mission in another yard.

Just when you think it cant get worse, it does. Talulu, Frosty and I were in the old lady’s house (I pass out in the food storage section) when we heard shouts, we are the 99%. We are the occupiers and right across the street from the old lady’s house comes this huge flock of geese(don’t think they are acorns). Once they cross the street it will be the beginning of the end I am afraid. We were huddled with the old lady and a knock came at the kitchen door. An illegal immigrant who said his name was Phil, said “how is the hope and change, workin’ for ya?” The old lady fainted. I decided to go sit out on the garbage can and check out the alley because our escape would have to be that way if we decide to run for the hills. Life is different.

Flock of Geese I hope they don't come over here.

Seriously it has been a good life for all of us, I am 6 years old, Frosty is 22, Talulu 16 and the old lady is 88. When you look at it like that, we are all on borrowed time. We are just going to live the good life in the kitchen because the old lady says that as long as her social security check keeps coming none of us will starve. Thank God for the Old Lady in the big house, she has made my life soooooooo good, and I think I have made her life soooooooo good too. Polly.

Don’t worry Polly, it will be OK
Don’t worry Polly, it will be OK

No words can describe what it is like to be loved by a squirrel. Lots of them will grab a nut from your hand but Polly was a one of a kind experience. She would run to greet me at the alley gate. She would come scratch on the kitchen door. On a sad note, she has not came to my kitchen door for several weeks. She may be on an extended maternity leave but she may be waiting for me on the rainbow bridge with my kitties. I miss her a lot. The old lady.

This is the end of the Polly stories.

Seattle New Years Eve Parties

I must admit one of the my favorite nights in Seattle is New Years Eve.  My other favorites include Halloween and now Santanarcy ( you must go to this if you haven’t before).  There is something about these nights that people just love.  Everyone is friendly and in a talkative mood.  The environment is much different than your typical Friday or Saturday night.

New Years Eve falls on a Saturday this year so it should be a really exciting night.  I have done some research and came up with what I believe are your best options for ringing in 2012.

Seattle Indulgence Party

I have been to this party the last two years.  It was fun but expensive at $60 + $6.23 service fee per ticket.  The event is held at one of Paul Allen’s Palaces (Called the Seattle EMP).  It’s a big event with 3 levels and different music.  For the last 3 years its been the same format.  Usually 80’s (at the small side bar), some cover band (big stage), and hip hop (upstairs).  The last two times I was there the small 80’s band outshined the main band playing on the big stage.  The big stage dance floor is busy but never full.  I just checked and I looks like it’s the same this year.    There will be line outside to get in.  They are pretty slow checking in the tickets.  They do provide a lot of free hats and party favors.  The most disappointing thing about this location (beside the ticket price, drink prices, main band) is that you can’t step outside to see the space needle fireworks when the big moment arrives.  You are stuck inside the location and are not allowed to leave.  Well… you can leave but you just won’t be let back in.  There is no balcony or any big windows to watch it.  That is a big disappointment because you literally are right next door to the space needle.  Being so close to it (hearing the fireworks outside) and having to watch it on TV just sucks.  That is very disappointing.

Bonza Bash

This will be held at the Hyatt Olive 8 Hotel in Seattle.  I haven’t been to it personally.  Tickets cost even more than the Indulgence Party.  They are $70 +$7.23 service fee per ticket.  I would say this is one of more luxurious events of the night.  It’s black tie which means lots of tuxes and black dresses.  I like more casual locations when It comes to the dress code (Indulgence is casual) so I won’t be visiting this one.  If you have a date planned and you want to wine and dine – then this place maybe for you.

Euphoria Masquerade Party

This looked interesting.  It’s a masquerade party so people will be all dressed up (high fashion) with masks.  I think this would be another good location if you have a date or wife and will be partying with the special person.  As a single guy always ready to mingle, this one is off my list.  One, there will be lots of couples there. Two, if everyone is wearing masks how you going to talk with people and get that special kiss at night?  Sounds like a lot of work for the single people.  This event is held at Seattle’s Republiq and ticket prices are about $17 dollars.

Masquerade Party At Pink

Another Masquerade party.  This one is located at the Pink Ultra Lounge.  Cost is $15 for ladies and $25 for gents.  I have been the Pink Ultra Lounge before, however, not for any NYE parties.  The location is better than the Republiq event.  I won’t be visiting due to the masks and ultra classy dress code (like republiq) but if I had to choose I would pick Pink.

Roaring 20’s Party

Located on Pier 56 aboard the ship The Royal, this event will be a dress up event.  You can expect to see gangsters, molls, politicians, hit men, jazz singers and Hollywood starlets.  The ticket price is $245.  per ticket.  I won’t be going due to the ticket price and there are just so many cheaper options available.

Sparkle Party

This is held at the See Sound Lounge in Belltown.  That location is great.  Ticket prices at the door are $40 ($30 advance).  I have this on my favorites to check out and probably will show up.  The music is electronic which can get annoying after about the first hour.  One positive is that they say they are staying open until 3am.  Unlike all the others closing at 2am.  Noc Noc is the only other club that stays open late that I know of (5am).  Belltown is probably one of the best locations in Seattle for nightlife.  If you don’t like this location, you could easily walk around the block and find something else happening.

THE ISLANDER Boat Party

This looks pretty good.  Ticket prices are $40 per ticket.  I saw last years video of the event and looks good.  The only problem I see is if the party is lame I’M STUCK ON A FREAKING BOAT!  I am also nervous of the gender ratio like how many women to men.  Nothing worse then getting stuck on a boat with a bunch of dudes on New Years Eve (unless that is your thing).  Last year it was named the booze cruise and I once experienced a booze cruise in Hawaii – it was awesome!  I’m considering this one.

Ambers

In Belltown this is one of my favorite locations.  If all else fails I will be visiting here because you just can’t go wrong with it.  Cover has always been free, however, it is NYE so I am unsure if they will charge.

Tia Lou’s

Located next to Ambers this is a good dance club.  Again you can’t fail going here if you need a solid location.  $20 at the door if you decide to visit.

So there you have it folks my top picks for Seattle New Year Eve parties.  If you’re going out or staying home just have fun and take a second to set some goals next year.  What can you do better or what do you want to accomplish in the new year?  It’s a new year and an opportunity to start something new in your life.

In fact, do yourself a favor.  When the clock strikes 12:05 am, take a few seconds to look at the bright moon above and think how blessed you are.  At the end of the day, we are all humans made of flesh and bones and really blessed to just be living life on this big green planet traveling 66,000 mph.  From the big blue sky, the fresh air we breath, to the shining seas full of life, we’re just small pieces in this big universe.  Our time on this planet is short and one day our flesh and bones will be returned to this big planet.  Breath in and breath out – before you know it…. that is life……you have to make the most of it.

This night is a fresh start and one of those rare opportunities every year you can experience that feeling.

OK now back to the party!!

Polly The Georgetown Squirrel Discovers Illegal Immigrants

You have all read about Polly the Georgetown squirrel by now, if not this is the time to do it. This chapter is meant to be funny and entertaining. Polly is not a Democrat or Republican so just enjoy.

In the beginning: There was a huge hazel nut tree in a yard two houses from the old lady’s house where I moved to. My Great Grandparents, Grandparents and all the siblings lived in that tree. We had a big communal nest. We had all the nuts we could eat, and bury in people’s yard for winter. Life was good. One day a bulldozer came and knocked our tree down. Tore up the yard which was our food storage. Ruined our nest. In other words just ruined our lives as we knew it. Mom and Pop were crying and told us kids there was nothing they could do to help us. Each squirrel was on his own. I had seen this bird feeder in an old lady’s yard a couple houses over and thought that would be nice. There was a huge, beautiful noble fir tree full of cones with nuts in them. I don’t know what to call them because they cant be pine cones and I never heard of noble fir cones. That’s not important anyway. I adopted the old lady and it was not hard to train her to take care of me at all. Life was getting better.

The old lady bought a squirrel sign and would put food on it by her back door. One day she put a whole bag of peanuts on it and I thought it was just for me. She meant It to be for my mom and dad or any homeless squirrels. But only squirrels. I started eating and just passed out in the bag. She pulled me out and said, “what do you have to say for yourself?. I didn’t know I had done anything wrong and said,” I cant believe I ate the whole thing”. Life was good.

I had been working full time planting sunflowers and had her yard all planted when she sent me to her rental property to work. It was a long walk, and I had to carry the seed in my mouth. I worked and worked and not a thing came up. The old lady said I was getting lazy and just eating the seed and she might just quit feeding me. I was so sad. She gave me one more chance and lo and behold I discovered the problem. That yard was full of the ugliest little white faced critters and they were digging up the seed I planted. They were tiny and I was not afraid so I said, “hi I am Polly the Squirrel, who are you?”  They said we are Anchor Babies. I had never heard of an animal by that name. I told them to quit digging up my seed but they said it was my job to take care of them and furnish them with food they needed. I said well “dream on” because I am not coming over here any more at all. I think they were illegal immigrants.  I told the old lady and she loved me up and said she was sorry and just eat on the back porch. She did not send back to the rental property. Life was good again.

When I adopted the old lady she had two resident cats which came with the adoption package so not only did I have to train her, I had to train the cats. I don’t hate other animals but we should not hurt each other and we should pull our own weight. One cat was named Frosty(white) the other was Talulu (Tortoise color). She told me they had to get along with me and I could not eat their food, yuck cat food. They hate seeds and nuts, so we got along fine. You can see in the pictures that I eat with each of the cats, and Talulu will guard me while I nap. I know some cats kill squirrels but not these two nice cats. Frosty would kill a bird and bring it as a gift to the old lady, and that was not nice at all, but cats do that. Life was good.

One day a black squirrel showed up. My gosh he was different. I thought he was really bossy but the girls loved him. We called him Blacky. He said he was a community organizer and that we should share our wealth. I was about ready to challenge him to a duel when he said, “I have brought a lot of acorns”. Man I like acorns. The old lady had some once and they were soooooo good. We welcomed Blacky with open arms and all of a sudden those anchor babies were in my seed pan and on the railing and had taken over my scratching post. Still not an acorn had been brought to us squirrels. One day the Mom of the anchor babies showed up at my special spot and said she had been appointed as peace keeper and that she had a lot of acorns, so we fell for that line from Blacky. All hell broke loose on the back porch. I discovered a huge illegal immigrant napping on the corner of my deck but am afraid to introduce myself to him. Look at MY beautiful noble fir there is an illegal immigrant in it too. Nice cones are all gone. Life stinks for sure.

Polly the Georgetown Squirrel

Well...Nice to meet you Polly.
Well...Nice to meet you Polly.

Hello, my name is Polly.  No I am not an alcoholic. I am addicted to people. I had been stealing sunflower seeds from a bird feeder in the front yard of a big white house in Georgetown. I had to walk along a cyclone fence rail, jump in a tree, then jump to the feeder. I had hurt my foot and was having trouble with all of that so I decided to go to the back door and see if perhaps she kept her seed where I could steal a few easier, without all the jumping and climbing. Well wouldn’t you just know my luck, there sitting on the back steps was this old lady. I had not planned on that and I was halfway up the steps. She just sat there looking at me. I thought at least she would scream and get up and go in her house but she didn’t seem afraid of me at all. Most people think of squirrels as ugly rats with bushy tails. I was pretty sure I could out run her if I had to so I just kept going up the back steps slowly waiting for her to go in her house, but she just sat there and said, “well along comes Polly”. She put her hand out palm up and kept talking to me. She told me what a nice squirrel I was and how pretty I was. I was in total shock. Nothing like that had ever happened to me. I got closer and closer and smelled her hand. She did not try to swat me or grab me. She got up slowly and kept looking back so I followed along. I was in a sort of trance. She went in her back door and came out with a handful of peanuts. She sat down again and kept talking and coaxing to walk up her stretched out leg and get a nut. I was so hungry and I just sat there and ate. She finally made me climb into her lap to get a nut. I got full and slowly went home.

The next day I still thought it had to have been a dream but decided to try it again. I went to her back door and when she saw me out she came with a dish of sunflower seeds and peanuts. This time she put her hand on my back. I was ready to protect myself but when she scratched between my shoulders it felt soooooooo good. Well after a week or so of this she got down on her hands and knees one day to get eye level with me and explained that if I was going to be a roommate I had to start to work for my food.

If you're going to stay around here Polly, you're going to have to work.

She had a dishpan of dirt and was potting little plants. I kept getting in the pan to try to help but she gave me a pan of dirt of my own and I began to raise my own sunflowers. I would eat some seed, and plant some seed.

I'm working planting seeds (and eating some). It was a lot of work.

Time went on and I was really happy. It was getting close to Christmas and I had worked so hard I thought I deserved a” Squirrels night out”. That’s the night I met Big Red. I told him where I got my food and took him home with me for the night and to the old lady’s house for breakfast. She gladly fed us both, but Big Red was not going for any petting and for sure not any work. I had to drive a sleigh in a Christmas scene but Big Red would not do it. He didn’t do things fun with me anymore but showed up for breakfast. He was just a gigolo. He even had the nerve to bring along a few friends but all got fed.

I was not feeling so chipper anymore but kept up with my job. I knew I was pregnant so I began to build a nest up above the old lady’s back porch. She had good stuff to make a nest with, like pretty plastic tale cloths with soft backing. I ripped those things to shreds.

Oh no!! I'm preggo and need to get my nest started. This will work!

I had twins and kept it a secret but when they started to leave their nest I knew she would soon find out, so I waited til one day she was sitting on her stairs again and I told the twins it’s time to see the nice lady who feeds us. I had to help them up the stairs and she sat still and I picked them up and put them in her lap. Love at first sight for everyone. She talked to the babies just like she did me so my worries were over. I had taught my babies how to get their own food. I didn’t have to teach them to climb a tree or anything. But I did have to stand guard and teach the cat that we were the boss. I sat on the railing watching and would tell the babies what to do. I use the cats scratching post for my high rise and look out.

I have something to tell you lady. These are my babies.

Six years have gone by and I have twins a couple times a year. I am the only one that has a full time job but the whole gang of us are waiting every morning for our big pan of goodies. the other squirrels climb her leg and help themselves to nuts and let her pet them, but I am her favorite. Life is good for this Georgetown Squirrel. She brushes me with the cats brush. She makes sure I get to observe every holiday and pose with the decorations. I am a really lucky squirrel but she is a mighty lucky lady to have such a nice pet. This is a win win deal. It shows that people, squirrels, and cats can live in harmony if they try.
