Opinion Letter: Homelessness in Seattle & Head Tax

Seattle Homeless Head Tax

Opinion Letter – Sent to City of Seattle Council Members 5/16/18.

It’s a sad day when you have to put a head tax on an employer for hiring a worker. To start out at $500 then reduce it is not cutting taxes. That is just to make it sound like you and or the city council are really working hard. We have passed levy’s and most of it goes to studies. Seattle has squandered double the amount of money they would need to get every person out of their tent.

First. you should stop saying affordable housing. Nothing is affordable to someone who does not work to earn it. If you wanted to provide shelter and food for the homeless it should be just the basic. No MONEY or cards to exchange to groceries. You could put up a thing like a circus tent outside the city. Have cots and kitchen going 24/7.

Anyone, can come in and eat all they want, as often as they want or sleep all day if they want as long as they follow the rules. If they cause a disturbance they should go to jail. You can’t hand out what you call rent subsidies and these people go looking at houses and apartments that are for rent. Landlords cant turn them down. they have the money for the first month rent with absolutely no background or credit checks. They pay only $10 damage deposit and that much every month afterwards. No Landlord can hand over the keys under those rules. The first night there (after they pay their $10.00) they can move out, take the stove, fridge, curtains OR have a grand drunken blast and ruin the place. No a landlord can’t even kick them out if they bring in others.

The first thing you have to do is stop the MONEY. This is pure socialism, and has not worked in any country, EVER. I don’t want to see anyone sleeping out in the rain or cold or be hungry, but I also don’t think they “we the people” should have to pay their rent in a nicer place than we live in. Guys in the army live in barracks, why should an alcoholic or druggie live better than the men protecting us. You have it completely backwards. These homeless people know they can come to Seattle where they can get a check to spend and still not have to report to a job and are happy as clams staying drunk and have no intention of trying to make life better for themselves. For sure these illegal’s should not get any help at all except a ride back to where the H—- they came from.

I have lived in my old house for 70 years. Worked all my life. Now all you have to do is have a baby and not marry the Dad and your paycheck will start coming. If you want to drink and do drugs and your parents have to take your child because you are unfit, then they get a check. How can any of this crap make any sense to a politician? You already know all of this, but don’t have the courage to admit it. You want to feel important.
Hope someone reads this before it hits the circular file – but you asked for input. This is mine.

Seattle Renters Criminal Records

Seattle City Hall Building

I am putting you on chargeable notice that since I have to rent to murderers (that has plea bargained, like O.J.) Arsonists, People that want to start a meth lab, tenants that have been evicted for non payment and property damage time and time again. There is no such thing as a Rental Application. YOU HAVE TAKEN COMPLETE CONTROL OF MY PROPERTY. Therefore, YOU need to be responsible for it. Going to see if Tim Eyman can get something going but until then anyone that wants to rent from me must bring with him/her a letter from each of you(signed) that you are responsible for any damage, and is like a co signer. I can’t ask how he expects to pay me, so you must guarantee me rent on time every month. My rent is all going to be tripled because my insurance is going to go sky high. So it’s blood on your hands to force this on someone who is trying to live on retirement and make an honest living. I would be afraid to even go into an apartment to show it, not knowing if he is really dangerous. The apartment house right beside me (I used to own it) has had 3 arsons, Easter there was a shooter shooting out of a window about 15 feet from my front porch. so get your reference and co signer papers ready. that is all I need. No applications will be asked for. Just your written assurance that you are responsible for his or her actions. What’s worse is you are putting all the neighbors life at risk. Endangering people who even go for walks around the block. You say asking about their criminal histories or how they expect to pay their rent is discriminating.

THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST ARE THE LANDLORDS. SHAME. I always went through Rental Research for screening and it worked out. It wasn’t even me who decided who would be best to rent to but for sure I didn’t have to rent to a criminal. No he doesn’t deserve a place to live to the point of thinking WE all are responsible for his bad choices. I will refuse to rent to Mayor Murray because for you to send a referral would present a conflict of interest. But I would not want him around my great grand sons at this point in time.

Now for the mobile home and car dwellers. We already have that in Georgetown. They park a mobile home and the drug buyers come and go. I am enclosing a couple pictures I took thru my front gate Sunday. Is this really what you want all of Seattle to look like? I kept going out taking pictures and this mobile home left last night but another will be back.

Natalie Khawam Fights to Save Members of the Military From a Broken Military Medical System

Imagine fighting for your country and sacrificing your very own safety only to come home to a very broken military medical system. Imagine, that you are misdiagnosed by the same military hospital that was gave you a clean bill of health. That misdiagnosis then leads to terminal cancer and now neither you nor your family has any legal recourse against the same military hospital that put you and your family into that horrible position. This type of scenario happens far more than people believe it does in the United States. The standard of military medical care is subpar for active duty members and Natalie Khawam’s latest case is a prime example of how the system has completely failed the men and women of the military.

Natalie Khawam’s name is very well known amongst veterans and active duty members that have been failed by the very system that was designed to help them. The military medical system is broken and Natalie Khawam is fighting hard to make sure laws and safeguards are put in place in order to ensure that military members are protected from medical negligence. She understands how imperative it is that these individuals who have fought so hard for our country receive the proper benefits.

As an attorney, Ms. Khawam, makes it her duty to help protect the nation’s veterans and active duty members. Her law firm, the Whistleblower Law Firm, employs dedicated team members that have a wide breadth of legal knowledge and the firm focuses on numerous practice areas. Although, as the name suggests, the firm predominately focuses on whistleblower laws, they are in no way limited to that particular practice area. Veterans and active duty members in particular are very important to the firm so Natalie makes it her mission to make sure that their rights are protected.

Unfortunately, the members of the military are having difficulties getting access to proper medical care through the military medical system. Even though there have been numerous reports about the lack of adequate medical care and ineptness of the VA and the military hospitals, there are still a variety of issues. There are so many people and families that have horror stories about dealing with life or death issues and how the military medical system has let them down. Even in the case of outright medical malpractice, there is no legal recourse that veterans can take in this particular event.

According to the Emerald City Journal, a Green Beret from North Carolina and his family are finding themselves in this same horrible position. Sgt. First Class Richard Stayskal is currently facing the worst possible outcome from an inept medical care. He is dying from terminal cancer and because of a misdiagnosis; he has very few medical options left at this point. What is even worse about this situation is that Sfc. Stayskal might have had medical options to help him fight the cancer that is ravaging his body. After his service and his sacrifice, he is dying because of a terrible and preventable mistake. Even though it was huge oversight on the part of military hospital, Sfc. Stayskal and his family have no recourse to sue the military for malpractice.

Thanks to a case from the 1950’s, it became law that a service member could not sue the military for medical malpractice. In 1950 in Feres v. United States, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the federal government could not be held liable under the FTCA for injuries to members of the armed forces that arise from activities conducted during time served. This established what is now known as the “Feres Doctrine”. The principle behind this doctrine is that members of the military are routinely injured in the course of duty based on the inherent dangerous nature of being an active duty member.

While in theory the law makes sense and should apply to most circumstances and injuries and arise during combat. For example, if medical care is rendered during a combat situation or when emergency care is needed in a training environment, the military and their medical staff make quick decisions. These quick decisions are made under incredibly stressful situations. It makes sense that the military should not be held responsible for treating an injured active duty member during a triage situation that arises during combat or training. The Supreme Court did not want to compromise the ability of military medical staff to treat a wounded warrior.

There are some circumstances however that should be exempt from the Feres Doctrine. When it come to medical malpractice outside of the purview of combat, there should be some exemptions made for soldiers. Medical care at a military hospital, during a non-combat situation should be exempt. Members of the military that face gross negligence should be allowed legal recourse during medical care received during non-combat situations.  For some individuals, they have been left with no way to provide for their families after a medical mishap and those responsible should be held accountable.

Sfc. Stayskal almost died in Iraq in 2004 when he was shot by a sniper. After recovering from this horrific incident, he joined the Special Forces. He was selected to attend Special Forces Under Water School and Combat Dive Qualification Course and during the required school physical examination in January of 2017, the civilian radiologist at the Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg failed to identify a large tumor midline his right upper lobe. Due to this gross medical negligence, and other mishaps through the military medical system, Sfc. Stayskal now has months to live.

His story is not unheard of when it comes to dealing with the military medical system. There are thousands of other active duty military members that are suffering at the hands of a broken system and they have no legal recourse. There was a basic right that has been stripped from the nation’s soldiers.  The right to sue for medical negligence is a right that everyone should be able to exercise, especially the men and women of the military. They should not be exempt from being able to protect themselves and their families from medical negligence.

Attorney Natalie Khawam and her firm are fighting to help enact critical legislation that will amend this wrong. She wants to help make sure that no solider or their families ever suffer from the same fate at Sfc. Stayskal and his family. Her team will fight hard to help defend the rights of the soldiers just as they have fought and sacrificed for the nation. She firmly believes it is her duty to protect the soldiers and the veterans of the country. She understands how much they sacrifice for the country and their very own families and she wants to make sure that they are safeguarded against medical malpractice. Natalie Khawam is committed to challenging this outdated law so that no man or women has to suffer from this form of injustice ever again.

Natalie Khawam and Veterans’ Rights

Natalie Khawam is a whistleblower law attorney in the Tampa, Florida area. As the founder of the Whistleblower law firm, she doesn’t only tirelessly work to protect the rights of the clients that seek her help – she also works to serve and protect the rights of US veterans, both in work-related matters and volunteer work.

The Whistleblower Law Firm and Veterans’ Benefits

True to Khawam’s dedication to serving veterans, the Whistleblower Law Firm provides veterans’ benefits services. The attorneys help with navigating the difficult phases of the Veterans’ Claim Process, from initial applications to appeals and renewals. For veterans who have claim denials or aren’t receiving appropriate levels of benefits, the assistance of the Whistleblower Law Firm helps resolve these issues, giving veterans the support they deserve for their dedication.

Additionally, Khawam has worked to include a specialized team of VA accredited attorneys among the team members of the Whistleblower Law Firm. She is proud to work with individuals like military officers, a VA Medical Officer, a VA Claims Examiner, and an attorney from the Board of Veterans Appeals to help provide veterans with the expert legal assistance they deserve when seeking help.

Whistleblower Claims for Veterans’ Rights

Khawam’s dedication to veterans’ rights doesn’t just stop at directly supporting them. Khawam also works to defend those who would stand up for veterans. One such instance involved a claim from March 2018, where a social worker at a Bay Area VA facility, Karen Chwick, faced repercussions for noting gaps in veteran patient care at the facility.

Chwick’s concerns originated from the lack of appropriate care for veteran cancer patients. Because the facility itself did not provide radiation treatment, veteran patients would need to go to other services to receive the treatment. While the VA hospital was supposed to help with referrals, there were numerous delays in treatments that, while on average were within the 30 day timeframe permitted by current guidelines, sometime stretched longer than permissible. When she noticed this, Chwick documented the delays and reported them to her superiors.

While she had hoped to see a change in patient procedures she instead faced harsh repercussions, including orders for a disciplinary hearing and becoming prohibited from patient meetings. Chwick ultimately chose Khawam as her attorney for a whistleblower claim against the VA institution. Khawam represented the case, acknowledging Chwick’s efforts and the importance of protecting US veterans.

In another case, the Whistleblower Law Firm represented an Iraqi War Veteran who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to a violent IED attack. While the veteran had been able to return home afterwards, he did not receive the appropriate diagnosis and disability support deserved for the condition. The Whistleblower Law Firm worked to help earn the appropriate compensation, better enabling the veteran to live a fulfilling life.

PTSD drastically impacts anyone who suffers from it, and veterans often have some of the worst cases due to the potentially violent nature of deployment. Without proper treatment, those who suffer from PTSD are likely to develop other anxiety disorders and commit suicide. By advocating for appropriate benefits of veterans, the Whistleblower Law Firm can help them receive the treatment they deserve.

Panel Moderation at the Summit for Civil and Human Rights

Aside from representing clients and advocating for veterans’ rights, Khawam also brings these issues forward for discussion with her fellow attorneys. She has made appearances at the Whistleblower Summit for Civil and Human Rights. This summit works to acknowledge how whistleblowing has an impact on the law and curbing incidents of fraud. At the 2018 Summit, Khawam and her fellow Whistleblower Law Firm members, Sabrina Mentor and Daniel Maharaj, worked to host a panel related to veterans’ rights.

The panel, Blowing the Whistle at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs – Another Perspective was a discussion-based panel, focusing on the recent 2017 legal implementation of the Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act. Specifically, the panel focused on discussing the state of affairs within the VA for whistleblowers following the new act. Aside from Khawam and her fellow Whistleblower Law Firm members, panelists included three VA whistleblowers and an investigative reporter to take part in the discussion.

Conversations like these are an essential part of protecting veterans’ rights. As the VA is responsible for administering and caring for veterans’ benefits, issues inside the core of the system could hurt the veterans who depend on it. Having an active whistleblower culture that discourages and stands up against these issues allows for veterans to receive the support they deserve. As someone who wants to protect these rights, Khawam encourages those who have recognized corruption and errors within or impacting the VA system to speak up.

Seattle Council Adopts plan for Best Start for Kids

kids-playing-seattle

Last year the voters approved a levy, Best Start for Kids. I want to state right here I did not study that levy at all. I did not even bother to read it. I knew I was going to vote NO. I automatically vote no on any scheme the council (King County or City) dreams up because it’s like deciding which Rat Hole to pour your tax dollars in. They had no plan as to how to spend it or what to spend it on, but now a year later they are still trying to figure it out. Instead of saying we need so many dollars for what age group they just said “kids”. I tried to Google it to find out what is considered a “kid” without any success. We have infants, toddlers, children, etc. but nothing for “kid”. I never thought anymore about it until an article came out in the Seattle Times, Sept 20,2016, that The Metropolitan King Council set guidelines on how to spend $400, million in new tax revenue for child development programs.

Well hold on to your hats because you will learn what a kid is. Here is how the Council is dividing up your tax dollars. They have $400 million to play with. About (not sure what “about” means here) half the money will go to PREGNANT WOMAN and children under five. WOW, that is a mighty early BEST START. They are going to help these ‘KIDS” before they are ever born. My guess would have been the whole wagon load of $400 million would go to kids under 5. There are programs for pregnant woman and they should not be included in this levy. Then it says “about” a third will go to children ages 5 thru 24. Another big WOW here. I used to be pretty good in math but if ABOUT half goes to pregnant woman and kids under 5, then “about a third” to ages 5 thru 24. What is it a third OF?

If you are already confused about your tax dollars it gets worse. The REMAINDER (no one has a clue how much) will go to community programs, data collection and evaluation. How are they going to round up these 24 year old KIDS. Some are fighting over seas. Some are sitting down at the corner bar, lots are in jail. I have two sons and by the time they were 24 they had finished their Army and Navy service and were married with children. If “kids” can vote and go in a bar for a beer at 18 and join the service I think they are a lot to old to be included in a “fresh start for kids” $400 million boondoggle. Maybe the times article is wrong but I don’t think so. Hope some of you inquire.

This data collection and evaluation can get mighty expensive. It can however, provide a lot of jobs for in laws, girl or boyfriends or relatives or someone the city needs to give a favor too. Very little if anything will actually Help any Kid. This adds to property tax, and in turn makes rent higher. Then they create another boondoggle to register all landlords to see why rents keep going up? It’s an endless tax and spend. Look at the money spent to somehow help homelessness. The people still have no homes but man the expensive advisors (Mayor paid one expert $850,000 to tell him its not right for people to be in a place like the jungle). So with $400 million to screw away on Best Start for Kids we can hire many experts, planners, advisors, and maybe even a new assistant to each council member to keep track of this CRAP. Voters please wake up and if you are like me if you are undecided just vote NO.

Your comments and remarks would be much appreciated.

Lilly Marek: Great Depression and the Barter System

President Franklin D Roosevelt great depression

Once upon time a long time ago a little girl was born in the little town of Victor Montana. Population 250 (some people said the census bureau that came through must have included the dogs too, lol).  This is not meant to be my life’s story, but since I was born in 1923 right before what they called the “great depression” and grew up during the depression I thought you might enjoy how people got by with absolutely no money, no refrigeration and still managed to live.  Remember this is through the eyes of a little girl. It looked entirely different to my parents who had to wonder how they were going to feed 12 kids (I had 11 brothers and sisters).  it is not meant to be the story of my life at all, just how I saw it. My first memory is wanting to go to school. I was all alone with my parents since I was the baby. I started school in 1928 and before I was 5 years old. Here goes. We were the Marek family.

We had a huge ranch. We were self supporting in raising all the food for the humans and for the animals. Had large hay fields,  put up hay for all the animals. Field of oats, field of wheat. My father took a wagon load of oats to a mill to be made into oatmeal for us to eat. He had a huge grainery to put oats in bins to be fed to the animals. He took several loads of grain to the mill to be made into flour and stored the rest for chicken feet etc. We had a huge orchard and a huge garden. The cash crop was from the dairy cattle. All of us had to milk cows. We had what was called a separator. You poured the milk into this huge container on top, turned a crank (by hand of course) and it separated the cream from the skim milk. Mama kept back what cream or whole milk we needed for the day for making cottage cheese or cream for butter etc. The cream can was set in a little ditch that ran through the yard right from the mountains. It was ice cold. The Creamery man came daily to pick up the cream. I have no idea what or how he paid but that was the only money coming in except for steers my father sold in the fall. My mother canned everything from the garden and we had what was called a cellar. You filled it with apples, carrots, squash and other things to last all winter. We also had what was called the ice house. In the winter you sawed large squares of ice from a shallow pond and filled this building with ice. When we butchered or shot a deer etc it was hung in the ice house. Of course it was not cold enough to keep meat more than a few days so this is how that was handled. I didn’t know why so may neighbors came to our house on butchering days. One would take a side, one a hind quarter for example. No money exchanged hands but when that neighbor butchered my dad would get a hind quarter from the guy that got one from him etc. They all staggered the butchering so we had fresh meat almost all the time. Of course we had chicken for fresh meat and lots of trout all year round. Everyone helped everyone.  The person who got meat and had no animals to butcher traded so many days work to my father. When it was haying time lots of neighbors came to work for us. No money changed hands so that took care of the fresh meat for him as well as help for us.   A man came through with a thrashing machine to separate the oats and grain from the fodder. Not sure how he got paid but the neighbors who got meat and other farm produce from us came to help too.  I think some of them got some grain for their chickens or ducks, not sure about that. It was the only way any of us could have survived. My Dad needed help, and they needed food.  We could not use up a whole steer or pig before it spoiled. I didn’t think of us as being that poor, even though we had no running water, no electricity, and no car. Actually, looking back as a grown up and understanding how people actually starved to death I was a very lucky child. I had good food, a warm place to sleep, and a goodnight kiss from both parents. I am thankful I was born then. The only car I saw was the mailman on the road once a day. If someone died or some other news he left a note in our box. We had no newspaper, no TV or radio. And we had a big school bus that picked us up and brought us home.

Other people in “town” traded their talents for what they needed. I will just include one family. Other families had different talents and service they bartered to survive. I will talk about the Olson family Johanna and Ole.  He was a chimney builder. I don’t know how they managed to live in Victor. We had tin stove pipes going out through a hole in our roof, and he built us a chimney of bricks. It sure cut down on the fire danger and we could have a hotter fire. He got credit somehow for meat, veggies and eggs. I remember my mother telling Mrs. Olson she still had a months worth of eggs coming. Not sure how many eggs that was but the Olson’s had 12 children also. As a personal note here, two of the Olson boys married two of the Marek girls.

Back then we had a lot of hungry men come through who were really REALLY hungry and tired. Now they would be called homeless, back then they were called hobo’s. They wanted a meal and a place in the barn to sleep to rest up so they could travel on looking for work. They offered to split wood, or do anything. My mother never refused them. She made them a big plate of food and always packed them a lunch when they were rested enough to move on. We never made them do anything. Mother would say a prayer for them and always said “but for the grace of God” this could be my son.

Things begin to slowly change. At school they gave us a cup of hot chocolate in the afternoon and sometimes a little box of cream of wheat we could take home. Dad complained and said where are they getting the money to pay for that? He had trouble getting enough cash to buy us kids all a tablet and pencils.

There were fewer hobo’s coming through.

We little kids could work for neighbors so we could earn a few pennies. Labor then was 50 cents or a dollar a day but mostly piece work. We got to keep the money we earned and could either save it or if we spent it but it had to be on clothes. One of the Olson boys that married my sister started what they call a truck garden. Rows and rows of onions, radishes for example. I got a job weeding rows of veggies, then when they were big enough to harvest we did what they called (bunching them) you pulled ten radishes and put a rubber band around them. We did the same with onions. He had a pick up truck then and took them to stores. That was his cash crop. Another man had a huge strawberry patch and us little kids picked his berries for so much a box. Our goal was to pick enough to earn 50 cents a day. He had cash to buy other stuff he needed.

It worked great. We kids had jobs and they made a living. One year my brother in law didn’t plow his field. He said someone from the government offered him more money not to plant that he could earn from planting. Made no sense to hard workers but it was called the Conservation Resource Program. He didn’t have to work but all the little neighbor kids lost their jobs. Didn’t seem very good to me. Not many hobo’s came anymore. On the school bus we could see men standing all along the road leaning on a shovel, doing absolutely nothing. We learned this was due to the Workers Progress Administration or WPA. This was in 1932 and 1933. It was the start of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s, New Deal. To me and lots of others it seemed like a bad deal. We talked to the men leaning on their shovels when we would wait for the school bus. They got boxes of what was called “commodities”. These boxes had coffee (we could hardly afford to buy it) big cans of beef similar to these nice cans we buy at Costco now. Little cans of deviled ham, and cans that were like spam but not called spam. In fact most cans had no labels. We would trade the men with the commodities of our fresh stuff and fresh meat for their little canned stuff which was like a candy treat to us little kids who had never had any “store bought stuff”. By 1932 most banks were closing and people lost all their savings.

The Olsons and the Mareks all could play an instrument of some kind so together they built a dance hall, called Pine Ridge.  I even got to play the piano in the band part of the time. People paid $1.00 a couple to dance on Saturday night. The band got paid whatever was taken in at the door and one night I earned $5.00. Then the truck gardener Olson started to build wooden toys because hints of war was starting and there was no metal for toys. I then got a job painting toys for him. One of the other Olson boys that married a sister of mine had the thrashing machine. So if you are ambitions and not lazy you found a way to make it.

Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do. My Mother died. I was 13. Dad was almost blind and us girls got jobs with neighbors cooking and cleaning their houses etc and staying with our married sisters or brothers occasionally. I did manage to finish high school (only one in my family to do that). By 1940 5 million farmers were on subsidies.

Franklin D Roosevelt won the election from Hoover in 1932 and was trying to get his New Deal going. By the next election in 1936 he won his second term by the biggest landslide of any president and his New Deal was off and running. It was the start of the government intrusion into how we run our lives. This story is not about politics. You decide if it was better or worse.

Just two other things need mentioning here. Health Care, and Criminal Justice.

1.  We had no healthcare,  My mother had no pre natal care. No babies were delivered by a doctor or nurse, No babies had a doctor exam or shots of any kind. (yep we all got the mumps, measles, and whooping cough and survived. My mother had 12 babies, everyone lived, not a one had attention deficit or any health problems of any kind. No one died young, and that sure is a better record that what we have today with all the doctor visits and shots.  You form your own opinion. We had no dental care either. According to rules and regulations today I.e. don’t drink coffee (my first solid food was homemade bread soaked in coffee). Raw milk, fried food at every meal. Now eggs are supposed to be so unhealthy (I ate several a day). Everything was fried in lard. Why did all 12 kids grow up so healthy. 12 out of 12 is mighty good score. I will be 92 in three months. I live alone, take  care of my self, have none of the old age afflictions except hearing and eyesight which comes with old age no matter what you do or eat. Still eating my eggs, fried food, drinking coffee all day. Still have my long and short term memory (I think). I should be dead or sick according to the best medical advice. Took boiled eggs in a little lard bucket (lunch bucket) to school to sit in the hot class room, but no one died from that. WHY?

2.  The only crime we had was cattle rustlers occasionally. You shot to kill anyone you saw trying to round up your cattle. If a new man moved on to a ranch that had been abandoned and all of a sudden had a herd of cattle, the ranchers paid him a homcoming visit to see if his heard had THEIR BAND on them. They knew they hadn’t sold him any. Our Marek brand was Lazy Heart, Half Circle, J.  If you saw your cattle there, you had a right to shoot him. There was no sheriff to come and arrest him or you. It was completely obvious what happened. He did not get a free lawyer and a long trial and appeal. It was overwith. The best part of that system was NO REPEAT OFFENDERS.

I will end this by saying I hope you have found it interesting and you make your own opinions about life then and now. If all of a sudden our power grid is sabotaged and you have no water or food, I hope you can work together to help one another. I can’t even picture it and glad I won’t be around. The mind set these days seems to be try not to have to work at all (you are rewarded with a welfare check, free healthcare, and a house) and without government to provide you with those things – I hope you have a plan B. But if you are smart if you loot a grcery store instead of taking three big TV’s (you won’t have power to use them) you take canned goods to tide you over. My guess is someone will burn the store down and ruin even the good food. Hope I am wrong. Good luck out there. REMEMBER, the government has nothing to give you. It has to take it from a wage earner to give people a welfare check, affordable health care, and a affordable house. The word “affordable” should be determined by the person getting it. If you don’t want to work YOU CANT AFFORD ANYTHING.  People filling that welfare cart are getting fed up and if the cart tips over empty, do you have a plan? Your parents are the only one who were ever responsible for your housing and health until you were grown and it’s up to you now to figure it out. It worked for the Olsons and Mareks.

Car Tabs With The Seattle Council

Seattle Car Tabs Taxes

I thought the City Council worked FOR the voting public. I thought your job was to get the best deal for the taxpayer dollars. I guess I was wrong about that because we were definitely hood winked into passing a $60.00 car tab fee that was to improve transit. It was passed because of the promise that was tacked on that the low income people would get a $20.00 rebate.
Now, you admit that a $20 rebate will cost taxpayers $37.00. That should have been stated on the ballot. Nobody but a fool would approve something like that. Sounds like you are running our transportation money through the Slick Willy, Hillary, Chelsea foundation. They too only give 15% to charity and use the 85% to live like millionaires. Council member Tom Rasmussen who chairs the transportation committee said it seemed high and non profits usually charge 15% for administrative costs but the committee including Jean Godden and Mike O’Brian recommends going forward with it. The advisor to mayor Murray says its expensive to give rebates. Then why would you put on the ballot to give rebates?

They are worried now that not enough people have signed up for reduced fares and rebates etc and are going to spend $718,000 to make sure more people hear about the lower fares. In other words they want to give away as much free stuff or reduced price stuff as they can so these people will vote for them next time. No one is working to use taxpayer money wisely.

The transportation department has NO plan as to how to spend all this money so it doesn’t bother them that a $20.00 will take $37.00 from what the taxpayer’s thought was for transportation, not to buy next election votes. DOT is like a kid with a fist full of money from a birthday party heading for Toys R Us. They don’t know whether to add more rapid rides, reduce time between buses. They should have had a plan before the ballot was presented to be voted on and we should have been told how much you would screw away. Why should we help Wells Fargo bank make money issuing debit cards. With people like this running the show there will never be enough money. Need to get rid of every council member that goes along with this . Someone should demand the $60.00 tab ballot was passed by misleading the public. Enough is enough.

I don’t have a dog in this fight. I don’t drive. But we have one bus in Georgetown that goes every half hour and none that go down highway 99 and to town on 4th. The transportation dept. has the 131 and the 132 go from town to Burien go down 4th, both turn at Michigan and end up in Burien. One of them could come on down the highway and turn on the new South Park bridge and pick up riders all along the highway. I have written to them about that but they are so “extremely” busy they have never answered. Too busy figuring out how to get more money and make other bus routes go every 10 or 15 minutes. I would be happy if I had a bus on the highway that would get me to town or to Burien if it ran once an hour. I am 91 and have to walk clear to 4th and Michigan to get a bus and back home to Corson when it turns to go over the first ave bridge. Usually both big buses are almost empty. One could pick up a few passengers along the highway, but there are none to pick up on the 1st ave bridge or until they get to South Park.

Hillary’s Emails vs. Troy Kelley, State Auditor

Hillary Clinton Hiding Her Emails From Public

This article is not about democrats or republicans. It’s about who has to obey laws and who doesn’t. No country can operate where the laws are not enforced evenly.

For example: If you did not declare some deal on your income tax (or if the IRS dreamed it up) they can swoop in with a warrant and seize everything you have. they can ruin you completely before you have a chance to prove you are completely innocent. They can take your files, phones, computers etc. This includes your personal Emails. Your Emails like Hillary’s might have your daughters wedding, yoga lessons or plain old juicy gossip but the IRS gets it all to sort through to look for your missing income. You can wind up in jail if you resist. All Hillary has to do is say she maybe should have done things different. She gets to choose what to turn over and with all her past lies I don’t think even her friends believe much of what she says. She put the entire country at danger. She conducted top secret business on her homebrew computer. She has to have had Emails about Benghazi and Syria on there but there are months of missing Emails.  For any ordinary person they would be sitting in jail refreshing their memory of where the heck the lost Emails are.  The Justice Department should have swooped in immediately and seized everything, but who heads the Justice Department? Another liar and crook who has a contempt charge against him. He could rush to Ferguson and help instigate all the turmoil with his pip squeak buddy Sharpton. Starting the lie about “hands up don’t shoot” They incited the riots but they just don’t talk about that part. Hillary can’t be turned loose free as a bird after what she did. For her to stand with a straight face and say her computer was safe because she had secret service outside her home at all times. That might stop someone from going in TAKING YOUR COMPUTER, but it sure would not stop a foreign country from hacking into it. It doesn’t sound like these days the Secret Service protecting even the president are responsible. They sure like to drink and find prostitutes to have fun with, or drive thru barricades at the white house that could have set off a bomb while drunk as skunks.

Congress has to protect us from the Justice Department and even our own President. He is selling us down the river.

Our State Auditor, Troy Kelley had his home searched, Justice Department swooped in and took lots of his stuff while he is out of state someplace on vacation. I have no idea what he did wrong or if he did wrong, but FOR SURE whatever the problem it was not anything like Hillary has done. No one has issued a warrant to search HER home. They say they can’t for some reason. She used her personal homebrew computer to conduct the highest of the highest business. What could Troy Kelley or even his employee have done that would endanger our whole country? They may have squandered a lot of taxpayer money. I don’t know a thing about Troy Kelley, but the Justice Department was sure interested in what he did or did not do. Has he taken a lot of bribes from Foreign countries like Hillary has? I am using him as a comparison as how laws can be used again State Officials who are no threat to our country, but can’t be used against Hillary.

The above is what my article is really about, but will add a little information that proves it is a hard to believe anything Hillary says. The State Department is a supposed to be a non partisan office. She was the fourth in line of importance in protecting our country. Now she just wants to forget about what she did or didn’t do and concentrate on running for president. This opens up another can of worms. Her whole agenda is going to be on Woman’s Rights. Of all the woman I have ever heard of her view on Woman’s Rights are right in the toilet. Look at how she has let her own husband completely disrespect her and their daughter. Put them to the worst possible shame while she stood right by him and blamed “the Right Wing Conspiracy”. Poor Slick Willy used the defense that he didn’t know what the word SEX or IS meant. Now it has came to light that the Clinton Foundation has taken in tens of millions in donations from countries like Saudi Araibi, United Arab Emiratis and others that are oppressive to woman. Girls are forced to marry at 9, woman have zero rights, can’t drive, or walk anyplace alone or get an education. They got donations from those countries while she was Secretary of State. Where are the Emails about those transactions? When you are fourth from the top dog in the country taking tens of millions from foreign countries have to be explained. Those countries bought silence of some kind. They did not donate to HELP WOMAN’S RIGHTS. Then of all things the web of lies entrapped Slick Willy. When he could take time to get away from raking in funds for his Foundation he took several trips with a convicted pedophile to an exclusive island where they had young sex slaves. The logs shows this happened, no one can dispute it. I think this guy has donated to his foundation, not completely sure. Why did he take trips there? Hillary doesn’t care it seems so the lies they have told are catching up. For instance, Hillary said they set up the homebrew computer for her and her husband. Well Slick Willie made a lie out of that. He says he sent two Emails in his life and neither were to Hilly. (lol)  Maybe they were to Monica or the pedophile making arrangements for a trip to a sex island to rest up from his fundraising. (lol)  Now the web stretched out a bit further and poor Hillary was not supposed to EVER TELL WHO THE DONERS WERE.  Hope she has to give it all back because she breached that promise but that should not clear her anymore. What if I robbed a bank and was caught on the sidewalk with my loot, and just took it back in and said, gee sorry about that?

This is just to get you to thinking about how the little guy can be ruined but if you are a top dog working for “We The People” you can lie, cheat, steal and/or endanger out whole country, and not a thing can be done.

New Seattle Driver Tax Pending – Pay Per Mile

Seattle Driving Tax Pay Per Mile

A measure is on the table and is expected to be approved by the Washington State Transportation Commission. In short, this new pilot program (trial) would require drives to get a GPS device installed in their cars. They would then charge drivers per mile for the amount they drove on the public roads. They could start the initial testing of the pilot program in 2016. State Legislature would need to give final approval for the test project. The suggested program was modeled after a similar project happening in Oregon. All of this is in response by the Transportation Commission to help pay for roads since the gas tax revenue is supposedly not enough anymore.

The program would also give drivers several options of payments. You can choose the flat fee (all you can drive), odometer reporting, GPS locator installed, or download an app on their smartphone. The fee would be called a road usage fee. They also stated the drivers would get credit for any gas taxes paid.

If everything is approved and move forward the full program wouldn’t begin until 2018.

With that being said let me say it again (as I have said it many times before) and that is our leaders sit around all day just thinking this crap up. They have nothing better to do but think of ways to nickel and dime the public for the failed or horribly managed programs. This is another attempt and example of my very point. The issue with this moving forward is that it would need to be passed without voter support because there is no way the public would approve such a program. With that being said, the public did put Obama in office the second term (after a horrible first term) approved Obamacare so maybe I’m wrong. I would like to think, however, the public would be smart enough to know that getting tracked and paying more in taxes in a bad idea. What angers me is that this is just one step closer the government monitoring. It would be easy the government to weasel there way into it behind the scenes (under national security) and use it to their benefit as well. They do it now with Comcast and the phone companies so this program would be an easy entry point to make that happen. Just another way to get inside all our lives. Another way to track cars and track individuals. It’s really not far fetched considering their involvement with the other everyday items we use such as computers. This will never be discussed or mentioned just as it’s not mentioned with Comcast or our phone service providers.

The other issue is the argument of not enough tax revenue. Sure, I can see their point on this one. We are moving into a more hybrid culture. However, the state has been cooking the books for years on this revenue. People are driving more and working longer than they ever have before. Gas is coming down (only because it’s Winter) but will rise again as it always does. I honestly am not convinced gas prices adjust due to supply and demand anymore. It’s a controversial and debatable topic. Our government has milked just about every program and service we have available. They understand gas prices, have reserves, and understand how supply and demand can be manipulated so more taxes are paid on it. It would be silly to think over wise. It’s happening but the public is very naive about it.

With that being said, I vote a big fat NO WAY on this.

UPDATE: July 2015, Oregon is going to be testing out this program with 1500 drivers (volunteers). They branded the program OReGO (which is a stupid name – by the way). These drivers will submit their driving logs or install a device to monitor their miles. They will then pay a rate of 1.5 cents per mile to the state. States across the nation have expressed they cannot afford to pay for their roads so they continue to think of ways, laws, taxes ect to make repairs. As I’ve state my opinion above in the article, I wouldn’t support this new law. I can’t imagine anyone else supporting it either. States have been able to pass agendas which are not supported by the people. As long as it benefits them from a revenue perspective – laws have been known to pass successfully. I can only express the solution so many times on the Emerald City Journal and it’s the same for every problem we have (education, buses, gas taxes) the people just want transparency in spending. It’s that simple. The financial figures need to be broken down by item for projects and determine where the money is really being spent. If we are actually spending all our tax revenue appropriately, the people will understand the need – thus fully support an increase in taxes. The states and cities, however, know they continue to waste money on roads, projects, interstates, ramps, ect that really don’t need work (but passed to keep people working only). They do provide financial reports but the data is very general and doesn’t get into specifics of spending. This is done on purpose so it’s not criticized. This is where we need accountability and corrections to be made. If the city or states can clearly itemize their spending with valid work, salaries, jobs, then the people will comply with the tax reform efforts. They will have to – roads are a must have for everyone. It’s not that difficult just prove where that tax money is being spent for the roads. Until that happens, I will be keeping my checkbook closed.

Recycle Your Food Or Get Fined

Seattle Recycle Your Food Or Get Fined

I’ve said it a hundreds times before on the Emerald City Journal, the Seattle Council and our government for that matter sits around all day thinking of new ways to tax us “legally”. Here is another one they just came up with. First, before I get into my rant let me say I am for recycling and I think we should be. We all have to do our part for a better Earth and community. With that being said, the time has come where you’ll be fined if you don’t participate. If caught you’ll be fined a whole $1 up to $50 for businesses and apartment complexes. Sure it’s not that steep and not going to make anyone bankrupt – it’s the thought that counts. It’s the thought of actually pushing it forward and another item they thought about just to stick it to us a little more. First off, food going to the dump or recycling plant – it really doesn’t matter. It’s going to decompose either way. It’s going to help decompose the garbage or it’s going to decompose is a separate section for food/recycling. Overall, it doesn’t matter.

What bothers me mostly is several issues. First, it’s another item they thought about to just stick it to the people. Why not make a few dollars out of this issue? Easy money and it keeps the power of the City over the people by laying down the law. Second, I don’t know about you but I’m charged to recycle my items. I’m charged for the bin on a monthly basis. At the same time the garbage company makes money on recycling my items inside the bin. Third, I can’t help but to think that this is a trick to make sure everyone is paying for the bin and “participating”. So if the garbage man doesn’t see a recycle bin by your door you can assume he’ll be going through your garage and reporting you. The garage company wants you to have a bin so now they will be snitches for the City of Seattle to make sure you have one and are doing your fair share. Lastly, recycling is a big business and our officials play the “do it for the environment” card to play with your emotions. The reality is that the more you recycle and participate the more they make. On a side note, I was at the dump a few weeks ago and they were selling the recycled compost for a hefty fee. It’s all about the revenue dollar and tax money. At the end of the day, 99% of the time it always comes back to these two factors.

The new law passed 9-0 by the City Council and will start new year.

Questions About President Obama’s Visit To OSO

Obama OSO Landslide Visit

I felt the need to do a follow up about the multi million dollar waste of money for President Obama to come visit the people of OSO. It was just photo shoot with Susan, Patty and Maria. But now that all that money has been squandered I want to ask if he noticed any thing different here than at the New Orleans flood. I know he was not president then, but should certainly know what I am talking about. Here are some questions he should be asking himself, and thinking very hard about answers he comes up with. He could learn quite a lesson here if he wanted to.

Where are the rows of brand new mobile homes that were furnished almost immediately for the flood victims in New Orleans?? These were totally trashed within a matter of months. Did OSO get any?

Where were the mobs demanding fast food instead of the free food that the people in OSO were cooking for the victims and workers. In New Orleans food that was good enough for the soldiers was not good enough for the victims.

Why isn’t the military in OSO to prevent looting, violence and raping that occurred in New Orleans?

Why aren’t the victims in OSO gathering in places like stadiums demanding more free stuff instead of helping one another? Old white woman in their 80’s are busy cooking funeral meals for the victims.

We will never get to compare answers if you even give this a second thought but I think it’s the mindset of the people. The people of OSO are working people. They were there to get away from the crime in the big cities. They wanted a home, that they paid for themselves. They wanted to earn their own way, and most of all did not want the government’s handouts that would keep them from doing what they wanted to do. In New Orleans most of the houses were free to the tenants to begin with. If something falls apart(tenants trash it) it just gets replaced. They have no respect for each others property and steal from each other, so it only makes sense if their house gets flooded, no problem, Uncle Sam will give them a new better house. Give them all the food they need. Meet all their demands to keep them from killing each other.(and of course voting you back in office) In OSO the people bought their homes, and were making payments. They bought their food. They always helped each other and probably did not even lock their doors. Perfect example how you can drag down whole cities by making them dependent on the government handouts. You are not helping them plan for a good future. It is more or less, one meal at a time. If that quit they don’t have a clue how to help each other. Nothing is of any value to them they way it is for people who have had to go to work each day to put food on the table and buy a house.

Did you notice any of that President Obama? If you did I am sure you would never admit it, and call me a racist on top of it.
